Hi, I'm writing my master thesis and conduct a qualitative research with inductive category formation as analysis method. Do you have experience and recommendations here? How did you form the codes out of data? What could be the codes definitions that you chose in advance based on literature?

Hi, a header text to carry out this type of research is “Basics of qualitative research: techniques and procedures for developing grounded theory” by Juliet Corbin and Anselm Strauss. First you would have to delimit the corpus of texts and read them completely, so as not to lose sight of the unity of the material you are handling in the analysis. Then, a suggestion may be to perform a detailed coding of the material. Here you will use codes that come from the literature, and emerging codes, that are relevant and cross-sectional to the set of documentary units. The next step would be to link the codes and synthesize them into codes with a higher level of abstraction (axial coding).

I personally find Mayring's discussion of qualitative content analysis to be frustrating because of it doesn't have enough information on how to do the actual analysis. I would recommend treating his work primarily as a theoretical advocacy of content analysis, rather than a practical guideline. For that, you might look at Udo Kuckartz's book, Qualitative text analysis: A guide to methods, practice and using software.
David L Morgan, thank you so much for the recommendation! I've also heard about U. Kuckartz, however, didn't find this book in English in open access. Could you probably recommend me a source to get it?
The Mayring's book Qualitative Content analysis: theoretical considerations, basic procedures and software solution (2014) gives a step-by-step guide, but does not explicate the coding process. I'm already working in the QCAmap software suggested by P. Mayring, so it would be time-consuming for me to change.
Ariel Hernán Farías thank you, very brief and clearly explained! But I've chosen another analysis method, not the Grounded Theory, so I would rather stick to inductive category formation/development.

Kuckartz' book is in English from Sage, so not open access.
