In organic letters you will find the following: Phenol (4.0 g, 42.5 mmol) and pyridine (6.7 g, 85.0 mmol) were dissolved in CH3CN (40 mL). The mixture was cooled to 0 °C with an ice bath. 2-Bromopropionyl bromide (18.3 g, 85.0 mmol) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at 0 °C for 30 min. The reaction was quenched by H2O (30 mL). The resulting mixture was extracted with CH2Cl2 (50 mL x 3). The combined organic layer was washed with H2O (50 mL x 3) and dried over Na2SO4. After removal of the solvent by evaporation, the resulting crude material was purified with flash SiO2 column chromatography. Colorless oil, yield: 9.3 g, 96%. Rf = 0.54 (hexane:AcOEt = 9:1). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3, 25 °C): δ 7.40 (t, J = 7.5 Hz, 2H, Ph), 7.25 (t, J = 7.5 Hz, 1H, Ph), 7.12 (d, J = 7.5 Hz, 2H, Ph), 4.58 (q, J = 7.0 Hz, 1H, CH3CHBr-), 1.95 (d, J = 7.0 Hz, 3H, CH3CHBr-). 13C{1H} NMR (126 MHz, CDCl3, 25 °C): δ 168.75, 150.49, 129.52, 126.25, 121.02, 39.68, 21.46. TOF-MS (EI): m/z 228.0 (M), 230.0 (M+2). IR (ATR, neat): 2985, 2922, 2360, 2337, 1759 (C=O), 1593, 1489, 1445, 1380, 1338, 1238, 1193 (-C-C(O)-O-), 1160, 1133, 1089, 1070, 1041, 981, 919, 879, 816, 752, 689, 626 cm-1.

Dear Nagendra. The method described earlier is good but pyridine has not a pleasant odour ^:-(((. More.... some quantity of pyridine can react with aliphatic bromine to derease yield. I recomend You to use heterophase system: 15% soda (Na2CO3) solution/ehter solution of phenol. And with vigorously stirring add an excess of 2-bromopropionyl bromide (or it's solution in ether) to this mixture. Some quantity (but not a lot) of 2-bromopropionyl bromide will hydrolise.  After finishing of reaction (no phenol in TLC)  separate the organic layer, water layer throw away. After evaporation of ether pure acylated phenol in almost 100% yield. Water soda is not so nucleophilic as pyridine and do NOT react with aliphatic bromine

I shell try to found a reference about my "acylation" proposition but I have not it just now because I wrote this proposition basing of some feeling and "hand-making" personally experiance in such reacnions. This why I desided to write this letter to You. It is a great pleasure for me to give (or to form in studet's head) a living image of reagets, their behavior, whims, tricks and features. I'll try to tell something about acylation with acyl chlorides or bromides. And I exremely do not like rafinated scientific language.

There is no need to ask to react acylbromide with amine. It responds eagerly and with passion. Because amine is base and nucleophile. Phenol do not react just like that. Because it is more acid then base. It can be raped and forced to be the basis by action of strong acids (acid catalisis), but we can kindly ask it to react by forming phenolate. In the senond case we ask it to perform it's more natural behavior - as an acid. But phenolate is not soluble in inert solvets. And water or alkoholes will react with acyl halides more rapid then with phenolate. More.... bromoacylbromides will react using both bromine atoms :-(. Heterophase system with soda (not NaOH) working on two fronts. Soda does not make fully deprotonated phenol, it does not even solute it completely. Therefore, soda does not take all of the phenol in the water and we can see it by TLC. Phenolate will not react with the two bromines because there is little of phenolate and first it goes to a more active position. On the other hand On the other hand the reaction proceeds partially (or more) in the water but the final product is completely converted into the organic phase and by-product - converted into a salt and escape into the water. In a single-phase system allocates the same salt (or hydrochloric acid) prevents the end of the reaction as "sits on the neck" on draft soda or potash creating interference. The trouble is that neverseless chloride does hydrolise and dissapier in water without reaction with phenol. So we have to use an excess.
