are there any research papers/articles/etc that examines the differences of what various media says about a particular topic.. and compares it to local/public opinion, which may differ from what is being said in the media?
For example:
News: People in X city support Oranges
People in X City: Most of us actually support Apples

I did not come across such an analysis. A lot of the new work in public opinion research focuses on the extent to which citizens' perceptions are not aligned with reality or the best available evidence. Jason Reifler and Bobby Duffy research these (public) misperceptions, along with lots of other scholars.
I am however keen to read the results of your research in case you'd be looking into this yourself.
