When running PLS with NIPALS in STATISTICA, I ran into a weird problem. In the module “Variable Importance”, the VIP values are never larger than 0.75 for any variables. To be acceptable as an explanatory variable, this value must be >0.8 (and most recommendations say >1). Even an artificial “perfect” regression gives VIP < 0.8, and of course, in no case mean VIP for all variables =1.

The VIP calculation (according to StatSoft homepage) seems exactly as it should be, therefore, the value should be comparable to that calculated in other software.

For some reason, we need to use STATISTICA for this task. Any ideas what is going on with VIP values there?
