What do researchers think about the benefits of the discoverd anti-cancer compounds islolated from the natural products over that the commercially available synthetic anti-cancer drugs? are there any extra benefits or may be the complications of the plant derived anti-cancer drugs will be less than that of the synthetic drugs.
This is an issue for discussion in this group.
Botanically derived compounds are not a substitute for chemotherapeutic agents but complement their actions. In my research I have come across many compounds which allow a reduced level of chemotherapy and/or a longer and safer application of chemo.
These botanicals also can be used in recovery period to prevent cancer reoccurance.
Actually, dreamly drugs have been isolated from natural products. If research is made in an ethical way, I am sure that it will contribute to add more to ordinary drugs.
Really, medicinal plant and herbs used in ancient time to treat different ailments and today in need only a real look to see all of its activities and to evaluate the medicinal importance. in case of cancer no one can deny how much people in bast were used plants to cure different types of cancers e.g. solid tumors, skin tumors, etc. (Please try to have a look for the books, Plants that fight cancer / edited by Spiridon E. Kintzios and Maria G. Barberaki) and (Plants Used Against Cancer. Quarterman Publications, INC. Jonathan H. (1982). ) I think as the time goes, we will see what plants give to us. Plants have wide range of secondary metabolites with different activities, for example alkaloids consider one of the major plant drived anticancer compounds e.g. pyrrolidine, pyrrolizidine, etc.
Finally, The growing interest in natural products as a source of new drugs can be attributed to many factors including;
1- urgent therapeutic needs,
2- the wide range of both chemical structures and biological activities of natural secondary metabolites, 3- the adequacy of bioactive natural products as biochemical and molecular probes,
4- the development of recent techniques to accurately detect,
5- isolate and structurally characterize the bioactive natural products and advances in solving the demand for supply of complex natural products.
I hope that I could give a short note about the great importance of plants (which many of us don't know).
I think that the very fast growing intrest in the feild of discovery of anti-cancer agents from natural resources is to find an alternatives to the synthetic compounds in searching for more effecacy in treating cancer with reducing the side effect complications.
As Cintai said its the dreamy drugs which we are looking for from the natural products.
