I am considering the use of alumina column chromatography because my compound is so well retained in silica. The eluent I use in TLC is EtOAc and it gives me an Rf around 0.4.
Now, the problem is that my crude is not soluble in EtOAc, can I do dry loading with alumina?

Yes, you certainly can do dry-loading with alumina. The procedure is the same as with silica. For those who are new to the procedure, dissolve the sample in a solvent, add the stationary phase, and evaporate the solvent to dryness. You have to watch the vacuum with silica to prevent silica (and sample) from being sucked into the rotary evaporator. Alumina is heavier, so this is less of a concern.
