We are planning to add 2 at. % carbon to a nickel based alloy. The alloy contains some amount of tungsten. We will use arc melting to synthesize the alloy. What is the best way of adding carbon? Would it be suitable to use WC to add carbon instead of pure carbon.

C does not form any intermetallic compound with Ni but it has a large solubility in liquid Ni. On the other hand, WC is very stable and extremely high melting compound and during melting if WC does not decomposes then C can not go into the Ni melt. So, I would prefer pure C rather than WC.
