It seems that before considering writing a PhD, in every research area, you should have first to have a lot of information about the subject. Writing a doctorate dissertation is showing an expertise on the subject, so it is inconceivable to start working on an area with little information about it. I think that the first step towards your goal is to collect as much information as possible about your subject.
