I am using an instrument (survey) to look at primary care providers beliefs and attitudes towards e-cigarettes AND assessing whether they screen for e-cigarette use in adolescents.
For my culminating research project, we MUST have a theory associated with our proposal.
I thought some of the concepts of the Theory of Planned Behavior Model fit, but if it doesnt fit exactly, can I still use it to guide me research? I believe that providers attitudes and beliefs on e-cigarettes (whether positive or negative, ex beliefs that they are harmful or can be used as smoking cessation tool) may impact whether or not they screen adolescents. However according to this theory, I would have to be looking at the providers attitudes/beliefs on SCREENING, not on e-cigarettes.
please help!

Hello Michelle Katmarian , I think you want to assess the attitude of Primary Care Providers (PCP) on SCREENING of adolescents towards e-cigarettes. I may not be able to provide you the accurate information but I'll suggest if you can check more on Attitude-Behaviors models and it's usage in different fields. For example, Theory of reasoned action (TRA), Theory of planned behavior (as you have mentioned), Reasoned Action Approach (probably the latest through TRA and TPB), Motivation and opportunity as determinants of behavior, Composite model. Using any of these models might be more towards your sample, for example the knowledge of the PCP is important, and the attitude of PCP towards SCREENING might be affected/influenced by social, media, policy of the government, etc. and why i mentioned this is because if there might be a difference of intervention (particularly policy for different regions among PCP) than the behavioral intention of PCP may differ with different regions. Therefore, the theory should be related to your sample (PCP). If the sample (PCP) fits to TPB, well and good or may be the sample is more proper with TRA or RRA and so on. I hope this helps. While I am looking at screening rates (do you screen? yes/no), I am mainly looking at ATTITUDES of PCP on Harms of e-cigs, use as smoking cessation tool, and comfort discussing e-cigarettes (I guess this could be part of screening?- "perceived barriers" to screening). I already have my instrument that is measuring these variables. One Option is I could add a few question to survey to address attitude toward Behavior of screening ( do you think it's important to screen?)
I guess the theory could explain and guide pieces of my study, and not the entire thing? I was really more interested in the relationship, and if those that believed e-cigarettes were less harmful were less likely to screen
