The U.S. NIH government and DOE National Labs were the envy of the world before high priorities for weapons, war, and low taxes and very low priorities for science eroded excellence and efficiency in ways likely to give leadership to others. Are there ways that these government labs might continue to support science and adapt to limit damage to science and the public?
