ACIP Recommendations for PCV13 and PPSV23 Use say that
both PCV13 and PPSV23 should be administered routinely in series to all adults aged ≥65 years.
Will there be any benefit of giving PCV13 ALONE in pneumococcal vaccine naive patients aged ≥65 years even if PPSV23 is unlikely to be available to be given in the next few years of PCV13 vaccination?
Anyone having had experience of this type of situation are welcome to answer.
In any country likes to determine the type of strain of these bacteria before the vaccine is used for these bacteria in that country ,because strain of this bacteria is may be not found within the vaccine stock , especially if there is no share antigen and no cross protection.

I asked this question because the CDC guidelines (1) on Pneumococcal vaccinations recommend giving one dose of PCV13 FIRST in pneumococcal vaccine-naive patients aged >65 years and following it up by one dose of PPSV23 at least 1 year apart in most IMMUNOCOMPETENT adults. In this age group, IMMUNOCOMPROMISED individuals are recommended to have one dose of PCV13 followed by one dose of PPSV2 at least 8 weeks later.

As recommended by Muthana A.K. Al-Zobaei Al-Zobae, ideal would be to know the strains of Pneumococci prevalent in a particular hospital before deciding on the suitable type of penumococcal vaccine for patients of that hospital's catchment area.
It becomes a problem if ONLY available vaccine is PCV13 at any moment and PPSV23 is either not available for use or is UNLIKELY to be available for use in a hospital during the recommended time frame.
I am sure many other doctors all over the World in other hospitals particularly in resource poor settings face a similar dilemma, when the local data are not available.
