Several research works have employed the use the FTIR spectroscopy to quantify and identify the microplastics in their samples but a lot is left with why the selection of such technique over the others. Meanwhile reading through literature, one is tempted to believe that FTIR is not that different from the other techniques. So the question is, why FTIR and not the others such as Raman, SEM, LIB etc.
I've never done this but my guess is because FTIR IS particularly good at identifying functional groups. Best wishes David Booth

I guess there are several reasons why FTIR is preferred over other analytical techniques for microplastic identification….. FTIR is a well-established technique and is widely available (so it is highly accessible); it requires minimal to no sample preparation (so it’s cost-effective and less time-consuming than other techniques); and of course, it can give great results on a wide range of microplastics in a non-destructive way.
