Plant pathogens are very specific to their host . In the case of non host plant pathogen they will produce hypersensitive reaction like necrosis. If this is the case non host plant could be anything apart from the host. Then why is nicotiana tabacum alone used for performing that test?
This really depends on the type of plant pathogen you are working with. For example, plant viruses are not inoculated onto Nicotiana tabacum alone. A wide range of herbaceous indicator plants are normally used to check the host range. When I do this for dicots, I use five or six species of Nicotiana, cucumber, beet, english pea, soybean, cowpea, spinach, pumpkin, C. quinoa, C. amaranticolor, Chinese cabbage, and Gomphrena globosa to see the host range. I haven't worked with monocot viruses, but I would use a range of grass species and some Nicotiana species. Nicotiana tabacum gets used because it is a host for many pathogens.
Thank you sir for that clarification , i am not looking for viral pathogen, i am looking for bacterial pathogen. Before checking for pathogenicity test on its host plant , it has to be checked for its hypersensitive reaction on Nicotiana tabacum. This is what i find in most of the papers,
Nicotiana is used because it has narrow range of plant pathogenic bacteria and HR reaction to many other plant pathogens. To many, but not to all. It is better to use additionally Pelargonium siloides and Plectrantus australis plants. Last one is most suitable for injection and easy-propagated by stem cuts.
