Co-ip is another good point. Some flags can be used to bind fusion proteins to columns for better (and easier) purification and can contain an unique protease cleavage site between the tag and the protein to get rid of the tag if necessary.

I would take a close look at the methods. If it is fused to a full length c-myc, that would be unusual and there would have to be really strong reasons for doing so. Usually the fusion is to a myc-tag as alluded to earlier. The myc-tag is only 13 amino acids (often it is strengthened by linking several of them in tandem) and that is sufficient for the anti-myc antibody to recognize. Generally the tag is small enough that it should not disrupt the function of the protein it is fused to although that is always an assumption.

As have been said by previous contrutors, c-myc is a tagged product which is normally attached to a target protein for identification or recognition studies using anti-cmyc antibody. It is possible to add the whole sequence to your primer if the vector doesn't have it. Depending on where you want your cmyc tag to be (N-termus or C-terminus), you can add it to the sense or antisense primer. Cmyc has just about 39bp.
