Hi all,

I know that, in general, using a validated measurement scale (where one is available) is preferred over developing your own unvalidated measures, but what I can't seem to find at the moment is a text that talks about this.

I'm looking for something that can be used as a formal reference that discusses the benefits of using a validated measurement tool over an unvalidated measurement tool (e.g. the validated tool has been tested and refined using the target population, has good validity/reliability measures, etc.). This seems so basic that I feel like I should be able to find it anywhere, yet I can't seem to find a reference that clearly talks about this!

If you've got a handy reference or two that you can recommend, that would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance!
