Publication is a good way toward scientific visibility, and recognition from the scientific community in your area of research.We can think , for instance, about Nobel Prize winners, how would we know anything about their research if it was not published ? Published research is important for the diffusion of knowledge and the advancement of science.

In order to  disseminate  our research, we need to publish them and that too in well circulated periodicals/books. Furthermore, open access publications are better then those with restricted access.

Because the publishing process is highly competitive, and to publish in a high quality journal requires you to compete against researchers who are much more experienced than you, being able to publish shows that you actually know what you are doing and that you have the potential of advancing your field. Writing a paper and not publishing it is like writing a literary piece and hiding it in the drawer. Nobody (except the writer) will ever know about it , or cite it, or comment on it.

A research paper ought to be published for the sake of visibility and more importantly, to contribute to the canon of literature pertaining to the particular topic. A published research too will have an impact on citation as pointed out by Avishag.

Agreed Sudeep, it provides an "additional line on your CV" which is naturally part of our academic journey.

Publishing your work is very important and it is the duty of every researcher.

Primarily, it adds some new information to your field of research. It answers some of the existing problem and more importantly create new questions. 

In another view, it adds to  your academic profile.

If you don't publish your work, somebody else may publish it and the credit goes to them.
