I am currently working with a selection of natural Arabidopsis ecotypes and I have noticed that several of them didn't form siliques on their first flowers. I know that there are different conditions which could cause that such as insufficient light or water. However, the later flowers actually formed proper siliques under the same conditions. Has anyone encountered the same and/or is able to explain it? It doesn't seem to be dependent on the flowering time as some of the lines which behave that way are early flowering while others flower very late.

I had seen this abnormally before. If I am not mistaken, this phenomenon was called partial organ patterning. Yes, insufficient of favorable condition can lead to this abnormally. For examples, lack of light might inhibit auxin production which reduces stem cells formation that is vital composition for organogenesis in plant. This leads to incomplete formation of some vegetative or reproductive organs in plant.

The first flowers are generally sterile in Arabidopsis accessions. I don't know what the mechanistic explanation is for this. However, we've been seeing this for many many years in all different growth conditions. This is not abnormal or stress induced.
