thank you very much @Sebastian Pintscher, other than this (for enzymatic activity), in other cases, some protocol change Na+ for Li+ or change Mg2+ for Ca 2+, is there any rule in the recipes.
In cases where one is focussing on a specific enzyme that can use either Ca or Mg ions almost equally well, investigators may use and report the composition of a buffer that is commonly used their labs for other reasons. Similarly, if one can use Na+ instead of Li+, there is a cost difference, NaCl being much cheaper.
