I would like to ask the phenomenon of spin orbit splitting in inorganic and organic materials. It occurs only in magnetic material or any general material can show this property. Actually, I am getting a tauc plot with two linear segments that shows two band transitions. But, this material has no mixed phase or phase transition in this XRD pattern, also it is not magnetic in nature. What could be the reason? is it related to spin orbit splitting?
The basic phenomenon underlying the so called spin orbit splitting is spin orbit coupling (SOC). SOC is a general quantum phenomenon.
The extent of the mixing of spin and orbital moments is depending largely on the mass and type of orbitals. This is why heavy atoms show large spin orbit coupling. A further factor are individual magnetic moments of nuclei and their surrounding.
SOC is often studied for magentic transition metal ions because you can measure(!) the SOC from magnetic data. But this does not mean that SOC is exclusive for magnetic materials.
