Is there any short and sound peer-reviewed literature (paper/book) and a short answer why especially rubbers get by degradation and using sticky? Various polymers degrade via UV light, oxygen, radicals, temperature changes, etc., through solvent/plasticizer evaporation, chain breaking, a saturation of unsaturated bonds, etc., to become brittle, to break up, to become colored/discolored, etc. …
But why do rubbers also get sticky and what can we do against it?
Dear Jan David, this is called reversion, when the stronger polymer crosslinks get snipped, the chains revert back into their original small chains, with freely mobility and low intermolecular interactions and cohesion. The rubber behaving like a latex, sticky and tacky, which is the intrinsic nature of virgin rubber. My Regards
Besides depolymerization and chain degradation mentioned by Dr. Bouaziz the migration of low molecular additives (compounding oils, antioxidants, thermal stabilizers, catalysts, co-catalysts etc.) may come to the surface giving a sticky feeling. It depends on the formulation.
