why peak area is considered instead of peak intensity in FTIR for calculation of electroactive phase of PVDF? Is it possible to calculate percentage of beta phase using XRD pattern.
Anshika Passi The peak intensity in FTIR denotes the strength of the respective bonds. Also, there are certain noises and baseline irregularities which affect band intensity. Whereas, the peak area represents the total absorbance which is proportional to the number of vibrating dipoles (i.e., bond vibrations) contributing to that mode.
Using XRD it is possible to calculate the polar phase, but till a limit and also the values will be different than those obtained via FTIR. Since, the peaks for alpha, beta and gamma are relatively closer, thus it becomes difficult to deconvolute them in order to find the polar fraction using XRD.
You can go through this paper for reference, where polar phase has been calculated using XRD.
