Why neonatal lethality of knockout mice decreases by degrees during mating?

I observed the neonatal lethality of knockout mice( homozygous ) is almost 75% after the knockout mice was generated. But during matings between heterozygous mice to produce offsprings, I found the neonatal lethality of homozygous decreases by degrees . The neonatal lethality has been down to 20% during one year. Has anybody been in this situation?What could be the reason? Thx~
