I have a abaqus dynamic explicit simulation with 3 steps.
The Strain energy(ALLSE) shows sudden extreme drop from positivee(about 5.0) to negative( abt -20000) at the beginning of step 3
step 3 duration : 0.03s
wierdly the ALLSE remains positive(as expected) when the Step 3 duration is reduced to 0.005s
What could be causing this?

In an explicit analysis, negative strain energy generally means high distorsion in your mesh. Under this situation, the first posibility comes from a reduction in the time increment. When you reduces the total step time of your simulation probably you are reducing the time increment. Please, try to reduce the time increment without reducing the total step time.
The main problem of the explicit analyses is that they always give solutions. But the most important question is that this solution may be unreal. Explicit analyses are generally very tricky.
