My partner and I are writing a paper on a geopark in the Philippines called Masungi Reserve and as we were searching through journal articles related to the history and development of geoparks and georeserves, there are more in Europe than in Asia.
Please see the attached link for a list of newly-designated UNESCO Global Geoparks. There are 33 in China, 8 in Japan, 2 in Indonesia, 1 in Malaysia and 1 in Republic of Korea. Two geoparks in Thailand are under consideration for future listing. This may help you on your current research.
I would say Europe is more densely populated with limited green space left that is not developed. They want to preserve a bit of nature.
Asia in mostly desert -with limited tourists -except the south and southeast near the equator. Some of your parks are just as prominent as elsewhere in the world, maybe not well known yet. Need to advertise them more.
In my opinion, Geo-conservation is strongly related via socio-economic level of the Country. This issue is not in the first order, people need feeding, wearing, education, health care etc, after all these topics, if the socio-economic level rises enough high, after we can pay attention and take care to the nature and their elements, geo-heritages and cultural heritages...I am very sory but, this is the truth...Even so, natural scientists like you should give effort about the geo-conservation in their Country, as much as he can...Not all the natural wonders, but maybe some of them could be protected for enjoyment of our kids, in the future. Sincerely...
