STZ is a convenient for type 1 diabetes induction in rodent models. STZ acts by selectively destroying the beta cell in the pancreas, but has different results, depending on the dose used. Doses between 50 and 65mg/kg lead to hyperglycemia without ketosis, so that the animal lives for a few weeks, even without the administration of insulin. During this period, they can develop secondary diseases caused by diabetes, such as diabetic cardiomyopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, etc ... Doses > 75mg/kg can generate severe ketosis and the rat may die within days.
The doses I mentioned are used in rats. In mice they can be different.
