Hi Bharti Verma, in my opinion the reason is that the sulfur-sulfur bond in the anion [O2S–SO3]2– is rather long and labile. The closely related dithionite anion, [O2S–SO2]2– is known to be strongly reducing, because it can dissociate into [SO2]2–. radical anions. I assume that the same can happen to the disulfite (= metabisulphite) anion.
