I keep obtaining a cronbach's alfa (0.56) when analyzing my data from the questionnaire Sexual Double Standard Scale (SDSS), which is an adaptation from the original SASSY (Scale for the Assessment of Sexual Standards among Youth). I first had to recode the Likert scale to values -1, 0 and 1. Could this explain the low alfa because of the low variation? Why is the original study much higher (0.68)?
