Lately in the conferences I attend, Matlab is the tool of choice in sometimes as many as half, sometimes all, of the papers presented in a single session of the conference.
When I ask, all I get is "It's what my advisor told me" or "It's the only thing I know" Don't people know that there are myriad of tools, from R to SciPython to just plain C, that are able to do the same stuff faster, cleaner, in a more open way and with no need to (sometimes) pay or (most of the times) use pirate software, which is no doubt sending the wrong message to computer science students?
