Dower goes from the groom to the bride. It is mandatory for Muslim marriages. In Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas, however, nearly all Muslim societies are characterized by bridewealth, which is different, as it goes from groom's kin to bride's kin thereby excluding the bride.
The dowry is obligatory in Islam. It is the strict right of the bride. In some societies, the parents are faced with unexpected expenses for the wedding party, the bride gives by her free choice her dowry and her parents as help to help them with the expenses of the party.
This ruling that all Islamic societies pass the dowry from the groom to the bride’s relatives is a great exaggeration and needs scrutiny. This can happen in some societies.
The Quran (Muslim's Holy Book) clearly states: "Give women their dowries graciously. But if they willingly forego some of it, then consume it with enjoyment and pleasure." (4:4)
But in some Muslim societies, tribal and local law prevails; So that dowry is taken by the bride's family, while this is not their right, but a right that belongs only to the bride. On the other hand, it is common in some Muslim communities that when they receive the dowry, in return, they prepare for the bride and groom's the essential goods of their house such as carpets, televisions, dishes, ovens and etc, which is called (JAHEEZYA) or tocher.
