Many studies use 4 weeks as the study period. Few studies have used 28 days as washout period and then used 56 weeks from the baseline periodo as the study period. Why only 4 weeks is used?
maybe because plaque-induced gingivitis is expected to have cleared after 4 weeks of efective plaque control.
Plaque-induced gingivitis usually sets in by 21- 24 days. So any efficacy for antigingivitis toothpaste has to be checked for more than that number of days. As the inflammatory component changes will be evident then. So, usually done for 4 weeks.

Sorry Dr Sawai, gingivitis sets in much earlier than 21 days. It sets in within 48-72 hours of cessation of oral hygiene measures.
