DAVID (Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery) is one of the most cited web based bioinformatic tools to date (and is still used extensively), but the associated databases (e.g. GO and KEGG) were updated in 2010 and the last news were also posted on the website 2010 (see for yourself: http://david.abcc.ncifcrf.gov/home.jsp). Has it been abandoned?
I also wonder: twice a year initially, once year later & then once in two years, & now, no updates since four years!? Hope it will be updated soon. The previous update included 'complete rebuilding of DAVID to facilitate future updates and development'. May be they have real funding crunch or they are contemplating on bringing a commercial version (as it happened to Transfac, for example)? Funding seems to be a problem everywhere though, particularly for maintaining databases and software made for biologists.
Does anyone know of good alternatives to DAVID? I have been looking at WebGestalt (http://bioinfo.vanderbilt.edu/webgestalt/) and tried some GSEA (http://www.broadinstitute.org/gsea/index.jsp), but where WebGestalt fails in number of databases represented, GSEA fails on being too slow since you have to prepare specially formatted files. I just want a fast functional annotation tool, that covers the most used databases (like GO, KEGG, OMIM etc.), which you can use "quick and dirty" just to get a functional feeling of a gene list (by the way, if you haven't tried it, GSEA is very good if you want to do more detailed analysis of you gene lists).
