While carrying out growth curve of bacterial culture I was monitoring extracellular protein produced by growing biomass, I found that it decreases as my culture reaches late stationary or death phase.
As much literature survey I did, possible reasons I found are, protease production by growing culture and cell acclimatization for nutrient starvation conditions. Are there any more reasons??
I think it is because of autolysis by internal proteases and also because cells are transforming into dormant structures like endospores and other non-metabolizing forms
During preparation to progress into dormant phase, a living organism at stationary or death phase, will expend its energy in synthesizing intracellular components and not extracellular proteins. It is trying to save itself by reducing energy expenditure by shutting down the protein sysnthesis machinery.
