Hello!
I have recently been trying to model friction between two blocks of different materials in Abaqus FEA. I have started with a very simple model with two cubes of different materials next to each other, however every time I go to submit my job, it runs forever, then in the "monitor" tab it gives me a variety of "warnings", such as:
- "There are 2 unconnected regions in the model"
- "The displacement increment for contact is too big"
I have little to no experience when modelling with an assembly of parts on Abaqus FEA and have not been able to find any videos online who are doing the same simple experiment as me.
I would appreciate any help possible on this matter and I have attached the files for my attempted simulation below as that may be useful for understanding my problem. I have attempted two "jobs" one for a compression between the two blocks and another for a shear force between them.

It seems that Gelatin Block has no restrictions from rigid body motion in x and y directions. Use symmetry conditions.
Victor J. Аdlucky after adding in the symmetry conditions I am able to get my simulation to "complete", however as you can see in the attached screenshot only one of the blocks is being affected.
The "Warnings" tab in the monitor window is saying that there are two unconnected regions in the model which I don't understand as I have set interaction properties, do you understand why this is?

What can I do to stimulate friction between them?
I meant YSYMM for surfaces S1,S2 and XSYMM for S3,S4 (see the figure). This model must be treated as 1/4 part of Compression case with doubled x and y sizes.
Victor J. Аdlucky would these be the only boundary conditions that I should apply or would I also need a fixed base?
Would these also be the conditions that I need for the shear model as this is the one I am having the most issues with?
Remi Conway, if I'm not mistaken, the PVA-C Block is already fixed (encastre). I think that BCs of symmetry will be sufficient for the case of compression. In the case of shear I suggest to apply a displacement or velocity controlled loading.
Victor J. Аdlucky Thanks for the reply. Am I wrong in thinking that if I apply a force/displacement in a certain direction that I should not fix the boundary conditions in that axis?
Victor J. Аdlucky What I don't understand is that if for example, I fix the boundary conditions in the x-axis then apply the shear force on the top block (gelatin) along the x-axis as well, how will that be able to create a shear force on the other block?
You shouldn't fix U1, rather assign it as a value linearly varying through the step (ramp amplitude). And don't forget to apply pressure on the top block to ensure Coulomb friction.
Thank you Victor J. Аdlucky , with your help I have managed to get the results to somewhat resemble what I had intended for this simulation.
Do you know how I can get the top block to slide a further distance? (As you can see in the image below it has only travelled a fraction of the length of the bottom block)
