We researched about effect of bioaugmentation of leachate bacteria on COD removal from leachate as both suspended and biofilm forms but surprisingly, not only COD didn't decrease but also increased in comparison with control group (without bioaugmentation), and this result was repeated for aerobic and anaerobic condition. Probably, its more interesting to know COD of bioaugmented leachate was higher than sterilized leachate after 14 days. How is it possible? Acclimation process was performed over 25 days through increasing concentration of leachate
It depends on how you bioaugmented, for example what species have you used. It will be beneficial to follow the microbial population dynamics in both control and bioaugmented systems. Sometimes, complex organic matters are degraded into small ones but observed COD keeps similar or even higher. BTW, are you calculating soluble COD or total COD?
Thanks for answering dear Yu Tao . I acclimated native bacteria from leachate to serial concentration of leachate from 1/3 concentration of leachate to 2 concentration of leachate. We calculated soluble COD.
Soluble COD, I mean, we sampled from supernatant of leachate and not from its sediment which is deposited as a usual. To calculate soluble COD, we performed no centrifuge and no filtration

For example, Yarrowia Lipolitica (a yeast) needs some Vitamin B for further growth when we want to use it for removal of some micropollutants. In other word, that kind of bacteria you have used, maybe needs some salts or.....On the other hand, as far as I know, leachate has some heavy metals and toxic micropollutants which they can be strong killers for your bacteria.

Dear Rashid: if you perform bioaugmentation (inoculation with some bacterial or microbial suspension) you introiduce some COD into the system. Did you count with that "added" COD?

Dear Vit, thanks for your answering. I have to say you this result was both suspended and biofilm form so if suspended bacteria caused to increase COD, this result don't must repeat for biofilm form but we had this result for both forms.
OK, but even if you have a biofilm form I do not thing that all bacteria are fixed to biofilm. Even more, bacteria are also detached from bioifilm to become free floating in liquid. It could add to COD of the whole systém.
You are right but if suspended bacteria caused to increase COD, do you agree biofilm form must have lower COD than that suspended form?. But vice versa, biofilm form had higher COD than that suspended form. What do you think about it?
