I've known that some Ranidae species, such as leopard frogs, wood frogs, and pickerel frogs (and there are others) have vocal pouches on the sides of their throats, while some in the same family do not, such as the green frogs and bullfrogs (at least not to where it's obvious). I'm curious as to what sort of evolutionary role this possible plays - would it impact the acoustics of vocalizations? And why should only some Ranid species have this bodily feature?
