In every simulation I've ran, the cutting forces spike up and down instead of staying at a fairly constant value. Why is this happening? I've defined a rigid body reference point on the cutting tool which is the node that the cutting force data comes from. Is the problem in this definition or is it possibly somewhere else in my model?
If you have some kind of failure layer, this may happen due to sudden unloading when an element in front of the tool tip fails.
Martin Baeker, thank you for that response that makes a lot of sense. If I want to see a better force output, do you suggest I remove the failure layer?
No, but you may need a finer mesh or you may want to run a filter on the force result (I think many publications actually do use some kind of filtering, IIRC some even mention this). Make sure that the oscillations are indeed correlated with element failure.
