After the global (and very mediatic) polemical about the Jared Diamond's work on social organizations collapse (based on poor anthropological proofs and a lot of neo-darwinist speculations: see also Why nations fail by D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson), sociologists and anthropologists prefer other notions to explain this "cultural turnover": adaptation (Sahlins), hybridization (Garcia Canclini), cultural renaissance, ethnic transfiguration (Ribeiro), cultural reinvention (Favole)... So, it is not matter about rise and fall (as conceptualized by V. Pareto): reality is dynamic and it would be better to conceptualize it as a transforming issue (as proposed by Edgar Morin).

I like Maurizio Ali’s overview above as it is sweeping yet concise. I have myself published a book (2018) and several articles (2009, 2015) suggesting that in the case of an ethnically diverse society like the United states, race/racism and capital/plutocracy can be used as silent killers of an overarching and binding culture/shared meaning.“ Once this happens, the society itself could fail. In this regard, I stand opposite Dmitry Orlov who posited that societal collapse happens in top down fashion starting with economic breakdown and moving to political and social and then last to cultural breakdown.

All human societies go through cycles of stability and change. Most changes are driven by factors like favorable climate , access to useful innovations and result in human population growth. . When more generous climate or innovations , like modifying /farming emmer wheat or large-cobbed corn or animal husbandry generate new food sources , human societies grow and expand. In good times, population growth eventually outstrips available food resources/ or sufficient productive land . These fundamental dynamics can be understood as cycles of Power and efficiency.

When rapid growth outstrips available resources, societies typically seek efficiencies--like larger cobbed corn, terraced rice paddies, terraced Inca Quinoa crops...or ,in modern societies--mechanized farming , assembly-line food processing and more fuel efficient transportation. The rhythms created by alternating growth spurts then innovative efficiency catch-up cycles lead to changes in technology and often in stratification of a society into different socioeconomic "classes", or "castes". The result in the long view is repetitive cycles of power focused behaviors/technologies followed by cycles of efficiency and retrenchment.

In human societies the most efficient ones enjoy the longest cultural life spans. The most power-focused ones( often military/trade empires) the shortest. In practical ethnographic terms, foragers in pristine lands outlast most more complex surrounding societies.... I've written about these cycles in three of my books: Anasazi America (2 editions), U. new Mexico Press; Pueblo Peoples on the Pajarito Plateau: Archaeology and Efficiency ( also U. New Mexico Press), and a book about American history and Society entitles "A Fragile Legacy of Well-being: Three Families and the Trajectory of America 1750-2019 (Cultural Impacts Publishing ,Santa Fe NM).

I think your question is focusing on the question of cultural processes at different levels and how and why they work or fail in the way they do, so I will try to offer you a capsule answer, as follows, from state of the art thinking in Anthropology.

Human groups adapt to environments with certain logics that fit their environments, with logics /heuristics for meeting human needs and for organizing activities and institutions/structures to meet these needs.

For some of those needs in some societies, such as for art forms or economic production, we have organized competition and means of meeting changing 'tastes', so that is the answer to your question about art forms and fashion and how they enter and leave. In mass societies, we also organize mechanisms for trying to maintain this competition, though the tendency is often to consolidate power and to lead to control by certain interests, which naturally changes the dynamic over time. The technologies that we invent can also change the balance in ways that don't fit the previous logic.

Overall, cultures and societies seek to maintain themselves and to protect against change for these high level logics/heuristics/ patterns of social and cultural organization. The underlying logic of human societies is to create rigidity of the systems and to pass this rigidity down through generations in the view that this will best maintain what works in the overall system. There are institutions of control that use power (legal and political) as well as of thought (religion, education) to try to maintain the rigidity. Over many generations this works to protect the group. The problem is over the longer term. In most cases, over the long-term, environments aren't as steady as they look over the "short term" of several generations, especially if technologies change that can alter the environment. Our internal logic of culture and society just acts on the assumption that the rigidity protects the long-term balance and that everything works in harmony. That is what leads to the collapse. The rigidity that is designed to protect the system ends up preventing the flexibility that is needed. That is what we are seeing today. Our systems are too rigid to deal with climate change that our adaptations ultimately cause due to their success. When you hear people say that they "can't change the system", what they mean is that there are so many ways of thinking and acting that reinforce the whole pattern, that there is no way to really change it without it collapsing first by itself.

We have a built in human logic that allows us to redesign systems once they do fail as a result of rigidity but that requires it to collapse first. The problem is when our technology reaches the point where the failure ends up destroying our environment and humanity. Our systems are not designed to deal with that problem. Or maybe they are, and the design is to lead to species failure so that other species then emerge .... That seems to be the natural logic of the biological and natural systems in which humans find ourselves.

You might find two pieces of mine of interest, that you can find on my ResearchGate page: one on "The Logic of Cultural Suicide" (what happens and why) and the other on "The Psychology of Cultural Suicide" (the mechanisms at the psychological level). Our thinking is usually rigid in that we have an assumption that humans will find a way to survive. But that is a religious belief that is just our desire, that doesn't seem to match empirical reality. Humans do commit suicide, which seems to be part of the natural logic of individual and group behaviors.

Reading through your question, it strikes me that there is a confusion between civilisation and culture. Civilisation seems to be an ethnically based term which is applied to a group who have become dominant in their particular space. I am certainly open to discussion on this point but terms like Mayan civilisation, Chinese civilisation and European civilisation have more to do with power than civility. Hence, civilisations can rise and disappear quickly because the underpinning power structure is either overpowered by the next civilisation or it runs out of the resources it needs to sustain itself.

Culture is a much more complex, nuanced and I think, fascinating question. I have seen any number of definitions of culture but we seem to lack something definitive which is truly a pity. The closest that I can come to has the following three factors:

1) a commonly understood lexicon

2) a commonly understood social logic

3) a commonly understood set of sources of knowledge

These are off the top of my head (an expression in itself that may belong to my cultural background) but the net result is a means of rapidly understanding the thinking and needs of a fellow human being. Churchill's observation that the British and the Americans (USA in this instance) were two people divided by a common language is an example of the issues in which the civilisation may be common but the culture is not and it is the culture that causes the problems. Moreover, culture is much more durable. Both US and modern British cultures can be traced back to common sources and those sources still hold powerful influences on modern behaviour. Using one of your examples, Vaudeville may have been superceded by the technology that gave rise to radio and then television but the culture of vaudeville still carries on in much of the popular radio and television programs, not to mention film.

I think that my key point then is that a rigorous definition of culture is needed across all fields of scientific endeavour since it is so often referred to but frequently confused with other phenomena.

In Archaeology, culture is dynamic subsistence in human society. Here when I am talking about both material culture and nonmaterial culture. Culture is dynamic because it is a dependent variable that can change or I should say transform with the change of independent variables like landscape, raw materials, natural resources, intersite relations, trade, belief system and many others activities. I always says Humans are the most adaptive animal in the food chain and that is why they survived and transformed in the evolution event of the quarternary period. The adaptive nature of humans according to the various independent variables cause the chance or transformation of the cultural system. That is why I sad in my upcoming paper that culture never change it just transformed from one form to another and we archaeologists who are dealing with fragmentary evidence interpret it as the change of culture. When we are dealing with processual or post-processual archaeology we should see culture as an ever-changing or evolving process.

It changes depending on the leaders and their people.

In my opinion, it would be convenient to "re-introduce" "History" and "Culture" in the codes of reflection, as they are the essential subject of Anthropology. What codes could Anthropology contribute to understanding the intense “media communication" in which we live and still in the midst of Covid-19? Those "myths", those "realities", those "indefinable substances", which when we approach them vanish, but which allow us to observe in astonishment the procedures, the flows, the processes, the structures, or their institutions from a different perspective. I deduce that the "computerized and Media World", which "appears to us" at times as a hostile world to such approaches so as not to deteriorate them, is also a challenge for the codes of Anthropology. Every anthropologist always dreams of discovering a still unknown wild or primitive tribe, and if it is in unexplored territories, even better! The famous polemics that Claude Levi-Strauss and Paul Ricoeur staged in the 1960s [collision between the structuralist, the first, and the hermeneutic, the second] still resonate in our “memory trunk”. Today, still in times of Covid-19 I consider that Anthropology continues to be a journey, that trip to "other societies” that we do not know, that “journey towards the narrative”, it's like looking at each moment for the "myth”, it's like searching every moment that "narration" and "traveling" are still together!

Civilization was steadily moving towards permissiveness, which has a very specific name - liberal fascism, the sprouts of which began to actively penetrate into Russia. Sumerian culture merged into Babylonian culture, for example the useful techniques of book-keeping were transferred. In this sense, all existing cultures are historical products of learning, contact and conflict; culture is practically our 2nd nature.

The true Cultures do not “abruptly” or “non-abruptly” become extinct, they simply do not become extinct or degenerate because they go beyond their people and the temporary Institutions that have passed through them. The "bad call" "Western civilization" has nothing to do with "true Culture" and the Western World proposes itself with many and varied Cultures that will not degenerate but will be safeguarded through their respective "Historical Memory", the Culture in its multiple facets "is" and not "should serve anyone", simply "transit".

Dear all, I globally agree with comments according to which civilisations never become totally extinct. I would say there is a kind of continuum from the paleolithic in the Eurasian civilisation. Of course civilisations can show a golden era and then falls due to various factors, but they however leave an imprint. The idea that somehow civilisations can become degenerate is an idea developed by the Victorians and expresses their moral values, although it can claim a basis in ancient Greek thinking where the best of a civilisation is at the beginning. Moral degeneration, which this concept relies on, is a silly idea and evokes the dissolute behaviour claimed of the Roman elite, not really true, while Gibbons more rightly identifies Christian growth. But none of these things is by themselves true. The Roman Empire remains with us in the Roman Catholic Church, the European Union and Europe itself.

It resembles yin-yang (negative and positive) ends in traditional Chinese culture. Everything goes toward one polar end and then reaches the peak or summit. Then, it goes down to the other polar end. Culture studies co-evolve with themes of globalization, localization, and glocalization, which largely affects the ups and downs of the culture studies.

The only thing constant is change. Adoption of new is largely restricted to material commodities and tangible things, I feel. In terms of progressive emancipatory, humanistic ideas are not so easily adopted. Wars still happen, gendered discrimination, and gendered violence still happen. Ethnic violence still happens.

Good questions invite great reflection and bring good surprises.
