Citation is often (not always) an indicator to the 'quality' of your research. I can't think of a reason why researchers would go to great length and efforts with their research without the intention or desire to have it read and used by as many people as possible. Sometimes, I note articles that have used multiple citations of mine. That, I hope, means that my work has heavily influenced their studies.
It's important to cite sources you used in your research for several reasons: To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information. To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas.

If someone cites your work, it means he/she thinks it is worth it. Being cited in many countries is neccessary for academic career development. And last, but not least, it makes you feel good.
I presume the question refers to citations OF your work rather than the need to cite evidence IN your work. Citations are often mistaken as a direct marker of quality - they are not. Some work is cited often as an example of poor quality or otherwise erroneous research. Sometimes work is incorrectly cited to support positions that it does actually support. However, all things being equal it is clearly a sign that someone in the academic community is paying attention to your work and while not all citations are equal it is surely better that your work is sometimes cited than not cited at all. The issue differs a little for practice disciplines where there is use outside academia, but for many fields the closed world of citations in the academic literature gives a fair indication of attention in the field. Like all metrics, citation counts need to be used with caution and certainly not in isolation.
I think citation gives credit to whoever does the work previously. When you cite someone's else work, you give that researcher a credit for the work he/she did before you.
Citations are important as they give weight to your research.it shows how other researchers have thought about this particular topic, what are their views and what you learned out of them
There are a number of reasons and considerations that invite researchers to cite the opinions and ideas of other researchers and writers:
1. Give importance to the document cited. Citation allows the book to be defined by allowing other researchers to have useful aspects of research
2. Reflect the ethics of the researcher and his scientific secretariat, and his commitment to the rules of scientific research.
3. Help readers understand the content of the researcher's discussions of the information cited. And follow-up sources consulted by the researcher and refer to information.
4. Determine the status of the work of the researcher and his efforts compared to the efforts of other researchers who preceded him. Citation provides the interaction between researchers and helps generate new ideas by discussing the views of others and analyzing their views, whether they agree with or disagree with the researcher's opinion.

Citations is an indicator for how much attention the paper has gained. Citations give a basic indication to the quality of the work and its contribution to the research community.
In my opinion, further explanation about the importance of citations is that because of the scientific knoweledg is a cumulative perocess, when you cite other works belonging to your specific field you show whether you controll literature on particular subject and you would like to be recognised as a part of that particular comunity.
