I have come across some papers in which the authors have replaced a matrix element with the ' * ' symbol and I would like to know what it means. Attached, along with is a paper where you will find a similar instance in the page 2858. What does that signify?
If I'm reading it correctly, it is a symmetric matrix. So the value of the star has the same value as the opposite corner.

I agree with Oscar for this particular case, but I would like to add that more generally, I think the symbol just means "omitted" (here it is probably used in order to typeset the matrix on a single line). Sometimes I've seen a boldface "\times" symbol used for the same purpose.

It is better that this symbol has been defined in the document. Oscar says true for many cases but in general, the value of the star is transpose of the opposite corner for real matrices. You often see this notation in LMIs for lower triangular part of matrix.

I had wondered once if the '*' symbol stood for transpose of a conjugate matrix which is usually the case in text books but since no complex quantity is involved in this one so it may as well denote the transpose of the opposite corner element.. I will now have work it out to see what actually it denotes..
The "star" represents matrix elements that can be interpreted from the matrix structure, being symmetric, anti-symmetric, Hankel, Toeplitz, etc.
The '*' symbol stand for conjugate transpose must appear outside at the top right-hand corner of the matrix.
