Different Citation Styles?

Probably only to complicate the already difficult life of scientists! Every time - while writing an article - I have to change one citation style to another, I get really angry. Don't you? It takes a lot of time.

I would be really happy if we could keep to one common citation style in most trusted journals.

Uniformity of citation style is a very good idea. I agree with Dr. Joanna Gocłowska-Bolek that it's an additional effort for a researcher. However, I think it can specify the Journal from its style of citation

I am so grateful for your your impressive and realistic comment, I suggest to create a group of academic researchers, to ask different international publishers to unify citation styles of course under umbrella of our beloved RG platform.

Really, I consider such task as a positive step in the world of research development.

I think the issue is related to the work of the publisher, as well as the academic, media and financial competition between the publishers.

Different citation styles have developed over time to address the specific needs of different disciplines. Here are some of the most common reasons different disciplines use the 4*main style guides:

Modern Language Association (MLA): This style is widely used in the humanities, since the style is well-suited to literature and archival sources.

American Psychological Association (APA): This style is widely used in the social sciences, since the style is well-suited to quantitative studies and analysis.

Chicago Manual of Style: This style is actually 2 separate styles, one with footnotes or endnotes, and one with the author-date system.

Notes and Bibliography: Widely used in humanities, since it easily accommodates a wide variety of sources, including more esoteric sources.

Author-Date: Intended to be used broadly in the sciences, this style is best suited for scholarly articles and books.

Scientific Styles and Format (CSE Style): These styles are typically used in the life sciences, physical sciences, and mathematics.

Why can’t we just have one citation style?

It might seem like academic authors can't agree, but really, authors write for different purposes and different audiences, and so the citation styles reflect that.

We continue to use different citation styles for two main reasons: disciplinary differences and tradition. Researchers in different disciplines cite different types of resources, and different disciplines place higher value on different criteria. For example, most researchers in the social sciences are more likely to cite a scholarly article than any other type of source, while a researcher in the humanities might need to cite a variety of source types, including archived personal letters or first-edition works. Over time, organizations like the American Psychological Association created style guides that were meant to help standardize the format of citations within their discipline, focused on the types of works most often used in their field.

There are different citation styles and each journal has its own preferences that you have to follow if you want to publish with them. I would be more than happy if we could have an universal one.

Popular Citation Styles

Good question. Changing the citation style, for example, when varying the publishing journal is an annoying issue. However, the existence of reference management programs (Mendeley, Endnote....) has greatly facilitated this issue.

Why? Partly, look to pride of scholarship. However, you might hark back ancient days of Mesopotamia and others if you pursued the question. Go for it Emad and educate us.

Uniformity of citations is really not a bad idea.

Uniformity is good idea but it will not happened because different publishers have different requirements and established databases and search methods will prevent them from adopting someone else's requirement!

Harmonization should be promoted

The main reason why there are different citation styles is because publications started in different countries or even different regions within the same countries and developed parallel with each other. The journals so produced from each region or country re proud of their history and want to keep it that way. So pride of history is the main reason why there are different styles. Maybe it also adds some variety to reading. I think we are stuck with these different citation styles for some time to come!

I agree with Joana and Emad for the uniformity of citation styles, Asaad opinion is very interesting.

However, I expect the success of citation style uniformity shall take place if the sun may rise from the west !

Citation styles differ mostly in the location, order, and syntax of information about references. The number and diversity of citation styles reflect different priorities with respect to concision, readability, dates, authors, publications, and, of course, style.

Researchers waste a lot of their valuable time on publishing technicalities. Citation style is just one of them, directions to authors are usually long manuals with frustrating tasks that have nothing to do with academic writing and are used with publishers' convenience in mind (e.g. fonts, sizes, page layout, visual material specifications etc.).

I am with you on the citation uniformity topic as there is no clear explanation on why so many different styles exist. It looks like a status quo that has never been challenged. Publishers need to think more in terms of common industry values (e.g. simplicity, consolidation and economies of scale) rather than journal/discipline tradition or fierce competition. Perhaps the initiation of a research-based global publishing protocol (GPP) would benefit all stakeholders involved in the research/writing/publishing community.

The article below is a good attempt to explain the need for different citation styles based on the differences between disciplines. Nevertheless a new approach might still be necessary and realistic.

dr emad please use mendeley desktop for citation. when you complete your manuscript using mendely its take a minute to conver citation style from one to another according to your required citation style.

i am agree with all that citation style must be uniform and one to reduce researcher time on this
