Well, there's endless reason why this might be the case in certain countries. But not many systems around the world encourage private universities. Sure the US does, but that's them exception rather than the rule in developed western countries.

As far as I know, here in the UK there is only one. It's reasonably respected, but not special. It considers itself innovative, but doesn't seem particularly so. It's a money making enterprise, but so are all universities here now. Some older universities are actually private institutions, although very few people understand that fact. Oxford, Cambridge and some others were private, but the state came to offer them increasing amounts of money to take state sponsored students, and for research. To an extent, they became dependent on this and sacrificed some autonomy. But much funding still comes from private benefaction, some stretching back centuries. They could go it alone as internationally renowned institutions, and sometimes threaten to. But that would be fraught with danger since the state controls who may come in to study, and how many. So here, the categories you use don't quite fit, I'm afraid.

I think that's certainly true in France as well. There, wholly private institutions would be frowned upon. Elsewhere in Europe, I don't really know. In a lot of other countries most private institutions are funded by American money. They operate in an international arena, hiring from abroad, paying much more than local public institutions can. Bilkent University in Turkey being a good example of this. British universities have also sought to expand abroad opening campuses elsewhere in recent years. Not many, but a few.

Institutions with much private funding can largely spend it on what they want. Higher wages, better labs, bigger names, more scholarships, on and on. They have their own mythology of excellence which they advertise well. More time given to the productive researchers means more publications. The list is endless, even if your categories aren't quite right!

Funding is the major issue here. Private universities are very consistent with the funding of new research, while their public counterpart struggle to keep up with many of their research because of inconsistent budgets and political interference.

In Nigeria, many private universities are not better than public ones but may be regarded as glorified secondary schools because the lack the major human and other resources needed in an ideal university setting though we have some few universities that are really leading other well established public universities mainly because of quality of their graduates and quality of research through better funding for science and technology.

Non-interference of govenmental issues, less holidays, hard-working faculty nd good academics to maintain the reputition of university..

Private colleges tend to be much smaller than public universities and may have only a few thousand students. ... Private colleges offer a smaller range of majors, but often have a particular academic focus.

The chance of succes in any autocracy with good intention is always high. This may be one of the reason.

In privet universities, less holidays, more facilities, employing best academic staffs, stronger challenges to get high Nur Ranking ...

In Nigeria, unfortunately government does not invest much in education generally hence the bad states of public universities. So lack of fund and vision are parts of the big problems encountered by the public universities. In the order hand, some privates universities are own by individuals who have vision want their institutions to lead and make names and so they invest a lot of money and also expect ROI. For them it is a business so they apply this simple business strategy.

In India situation is reverse, private universities are lowering the quality of higher education, because education has solely become a business for these universities.

Most of the cases, the public universities hold higher ranking compared to private universities..Still there are some good private universities in every country which have better ranking.

Collection of hefty tuition brings in a lot of money with which they can hire better faculty and build high class labs. SOmewhat less regulations from teh government allowing them to carry on research more indpendnlty usand ing prmore ivate funding. than public institutions

This is not always the case. Public universities are often much better than private universities. In particular cases, the scientific and organizational level of private universities is increasing due to the funding and solid support of some scientific and social institutions for them.

Actually this case is different from one country to another, it depents on a number of factors: Official laws , facilities, acadinic staffs, financial supports....

public univeristy are much better than private i am agree with@arvind in south asia private sector institute only earn money and attract high ranked faculty and rich class due to small eneterprise their quality of education and resource per student shows better but actully parctically not

Private Universities are far better that government owned (public Universities)

1. The lecturers do receive maximum support for their research work eg. Covenant University and Landmark University in Nigeria. They always give maximum support to their lecturers

2. Good collaborations with industries; this help to secure good jobs for their graduates

3. International collaborations and exchange program

4. Good and encouraging salaries

5. Enabling environment for research (well equipped laboratory)

To mention but a few

because these private universities stick to good qualifications of the scientific teaching in all subject taught
