When I react DABCO with CPTMS-treated silica, I am getting very poor loading. The same happens when I use DBU or piperazine. Why do you think is this? Could it be that the solvent (acetone) is not completely anhydrous? How can you dehydrate completely acetone?
Roderick Abdilla What are your drying conditions for the silica and how is it functionalized (only with CPTMS?) and stored? It's helpful if you define your acronyms.
I am activating silica with 6M HCl, then I filter, wash and dry before refluxing in toluene with CPTMS (chloropropyltrimethoxysilane) to functionalise the silica with chloropropyl groups. Ultimately, the Silica-CPTMS is refluxed in acetone with DMSO to substitute the chlorine with the amine
Roderick Abdilla I’d consider drying your silica at 150 - 200 C before the activation with HCl and after activation in a similar manner. Keep in a desiccator before use.
