To me Noam Chomsky is the most important linguist that is always associated to Linguistics.
Without any doubt Chambers and Trudgill for their book Dialectology which I always use as a reference for my own research.
Paul Grice with his best-known idea is the cooperative principle, which breaks down how people behave in conversations in order to enable effective communication. Grice articulates that speakers must be truthful, relevant, and unambiguous, and must say neither too much nor too little. If a speaker violates one of these principles (known as “maxims” in Grice’s terminology), communication is compromised.
