Euler and Newton are considered as the best mathematicians. Gauss, Weierstrass and Riemann are considered as the best theorist. Archimedes is often considered as the greatest mathematical genius who ever lived. I am not interested in google searches and links. What do you think?

He also made the spiral pump, which is still used today. Archimedes tried in finding the value of pie which helped in the building of the great pyramid of Giza in Egypt
Without him and the ancient Greek mathematicians and physicists we will still live in caves and eat bananas like monkeys.
In rating these geniuses one needs to take account of what they had to build on. Gauss and Euler we were original but had 1500 years of other brilliant minds as a starting block- what Newton called “ the shoulders of giants “. Archimedes got there out of almost nothing. I would put him top.

He said that there are 7 satellites of Saturn before 8000 years and now NASA scientists does not had find the 8th one..+41

I dislike the word "greatest" in this context; used as it is here "greatest" is a very unmathemetical term. The question "who is the greatest mathematician?" reminds me of the question "when did you stop beating your wife?" asked of a man who has no wife.
However, I do like Paul Erdős, who has the greatest* Erdős number of 0.

It is very difficult to say who was the greatest mathematician because mathematics developed to a very advanced level in most of the great civilizations of the past. At this moment, most of our mathematical knowledge builds on the contributions of Leibnitz, Euler, Gauss, Lagrange, Laplace, Galois, Lobatchewsky, Riemann and Poincare. Consequently, they are considered the greatest mathematicians. In my personal opinion, however, the most astonishing mathematical genius is exemplified by Ramanujan.
I agree with Dr. Januz that "It is very difficult to say who was the greatest mathematician because mathematics developed to a very advanced level in most of the great civilizations of the past".
It is said that a genius is born every 500 years and I think it is true. In my opinion, the greatest scientists that ever lived are three; Archimedes, da Vinci, and Einstein. Archimedes and da Vinci were born with a difference of more than 1700 years while da Vinci and Einstein were born with a difference of more than 420 years. Archimedes is the greatest mathematician of all time. His thinking about the solution of several problems was almost 2000 years ahead of his time. He solved problems of finding areas and volumes in a very similar way as is done today by using Integral Calculus. Besides, he was able to use his incredibly powerful mind to solve difficult applied problems like using parabolic reflectors to burn the ships of his city's enemies.
Da Vinci had the widest areas of research interest any other scientist could have ever, including mathematics, architecture, geology, hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, engineering, anatomy, painting, and sculpting among others. Reading the list of da Vinci achievements, you are astonished by the way he was able to paint the internal parts of the human body. There is one painting that looks like an exact replica of a real X-ray image.
Einstein is the greatest physicist that ever lived. His special theory of relativity, his formula E = mc2 and his general theory of relativity are among the greatest scientific achievements of all time. I am also amazed with the exactness of the astronomical predictions following the formulation of his general theory of relativity.
Can any body define the adjective "Greatest"? In my opinion, each mathematician is "Greatest" in his/her own field of research. One may not be aware of all branches of mathematics and hence comparison among mathematicians of different branches is unjustifiable. Even the name(s) recommended by the RG group members are not of the same field and hence each one has a different list. In fact "Greatest" could be decided in contexts not universally. So the question should have been - Who is the greatest mathematician in XYZ field where XYZ may stand for Real Analysis, Algebra, Statistics and so on?
To Vagisha Sharma, some think it was Newton, Gauss, Euler, Laplace, etc and others posted alternatives on this page. It is simply an opinion based on experience and areas of interest. For me, it is enlightening to read the different responses.
Add some Russians - Krylov, Kolmogorov, then mix in Measure theory and probability, Lebesgue. Geometry and Riemann. Cantor (uncountable sets, the continuum hypothesis, Turing)!
The Bernoulli brothers, Laplace, Fourier, Lagrange.
Distributions (Schwarz, Sobolev spaces).
What about David Hilbert (Hilbert Spaces) and the 20 problems.
John Von Neumann (Game Theory), Kurt Goedel ! (incompleteness).

In my view, two are greatest mathematicians. They are
1. Hippocrates of Chios ( 450 BC) who is popularly called as Founding Father of Mathematics. He is great because he SQUARED A FULL CIRCLE. And
2. Hippasus of Metapontum (450 BC) who has introduced Square Root of 2 for diagonal and gave full life to Pythagoream.
I would add Kurt Friedrich Gödel for his incompleteness theorems that completely changed the way we view mathematics.
I would add Descartes, who combines geometry and algebra successfully. I really admire his heart-shape function, which makes math so interesting.@Viktor Holubec
