Your question reminds me a Chinese proverb said "Traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books." Think if possible, we should do the field trip in nature as the learning / knowledge gained is tremendous & very enriching. However, sometimes due to resource constraints like time, speed, money, health, reality (e.g. travel to Mars now) etc, we need to learn from book & Internet. Between book and Internet, finding the Internet is more efficient (less tedious to buy / borrow & return books, less physical space), more dynamic (e.g. include the latest updates in websites) etc.
I have to go with the Internet. Pretty much all of the information I need to create my own thoughts & ideas can be found there. I can also communicate with real people 1:1 & virtually travel to almost anywhere in the real & virtual world. Lived experiences are wonderful, but not always easy to come by 🌏📚🚀
An interesting discussion, I think all these experiences support and reinforce each other as already noted.
I did a study on formative experiences of those interested in natural history / biology some years ago and the answer was unambiguously experiences in nature. But times are changing and learning experiences including formative ones, can increasingly be sourced in a technological framework.
if you make choose between internet and book mean i choose books but more than that you give a choose of field work that's the good teacher all time. my first and always best choose is field work
As an engineer doing practical/applied research, I gain my knowledge mostly from the industrial field, machine, process to be automated. Interaction with future users is immeasurable!
Our mind is a storage of knowledge which we have prior to our birth retained for our action of previous lives. This remains a part of our memory to be nurtured in our present life.
We have observed within our family & also as a member of social fabrics & we find that some member remain below average ,average ,above average ,intelligent ,& genius .
We do not have any type in day to day activities to find the reason why there should such disparity among the environment which we are accustomed & we have ignore & never pay required attention .
With this as to the knowledge which has an implication of memory ,,intelligence ,higher mode of intelligence in the form of genius ,play an very important part in the light of our knowledge for our Life.
It is this development process whether one should take recourse to books ,Internet,or field trip of nature .This is an exclusive domination for the person concern.
Nature is an ideal interactive teacher whose greatest teaching for vital survival skills is ‘trial and error’. Nature has many wonders, intricacies, beauties and events from which we can derive many good things and many horrors the make us capable of surviving in adversities. The Nature helps us understand about life itself. When we are aware of ourselves, we then learn to live life well and become complete. As far as knowledge from boos and internet is concerned, Books are indeed more reliable than the sources on the internet because they are reviewed before publishing. They provide in-depth knowledge on a specific aspect. Books have an advantage precisely because they slow down the process of reading allowing the reader to internalize, respond, react and transform. The information of books stays for a long period while information on the internet changing ever hour. Internet itself came from books/journals/magazines in addition to certain online publications. On the other hand Internet is an ocean of information and knowledge with miles width but little depth. It has advantage of quick retrieval and access to a number of web-portals on a specific aspect thus providing diversity of knowledge. So conclusively all sources of information complement each other. However I shall place Nature at the top and subsequently Books and Internet.
To gain knowledge we must look for the best sources which provide better knowledge. So media is not important whether it be in the book, or on the internet, or above of the tree. Those who diligently seek good seek favor.
Think another alternative to gain knowledge is to use Virtual Reality (hybrid between technology + field trip in which some are impossible e.g. at nano / atomic level). Virtual Reality (VR) improves learning e.g. through immersing into seeing or experiencing the biological / nano / atomic chemical reaction or how a complex computer systems are working i.e. sending command / receiving data packets or signals etc. so that understanding is deeper & clearer. To know more about VR & comments from other RG scholars, you can refer to this RG post:
Nothing will not help you if you will not carefully observe and perceive and think about what you see (reed). Internet brings extensive and some superficial understanding. It is a rich in amount of information - but also mistakes. But some books can do the same. Well, nature is able nicely dissemble, to hide its secrets and magic. I think the best is careful combination of all above.
It is the natural data described in the internet, but new discoveries will not be made in the internet, but in a field trip and after hard observations in the field.
This is a good question with lots of possible answers.
In addition to what has already been incisively observed by others, there is something else that we might want to add.
I rank a good book and trekking through woods, over hills and climbing mountains as great sources of knowledge.
For me, the best sources of knowledge and my best teachers were my parents. From my parents, I learned to appreciate and observe the physical world (nature) and to listen to others who obviously had quite a lot of knowledge and understanding.
To acquire knowledge, one must study. Knowledge can be gathered while travelling: in a book, in nature, science, or even in the internet.
But to generate some new knowledge, one also needs big imagination and a pinch of inspiration. Everyone has his own sources of imagination and inspiration: like travelling, reading, awesome sightseeing, interesting conversation, or even a cup of coffee:)
Besides, we have some very special and precious people in our lives who unconditionally support and always inspire us.
Thank you @James F Peters, for reminding me to thank them.
field work and visit to different localities always give an opportunity to come directly in contact with the plant and animal taxa. Moreover, it shows the variation as well as different phytoassociates which suggests the interaction among different organisms.. while net gives only idea of the organism. Books gives the conceptual clarity and lay the foundation of the nature.
Knowledge acquired from nature, from the field is basis for ,up to now, internet based knowledge. So definite answer is nature. Internet can not give you better but faster info about knowledge.
For best knowledge one needs and complements the other: nature and books and papers. Internet is a supporting tool to find specific infos., images, papers or books. Teachers are nature and books.
In my opinion and experience, nature with books is the 'best teacher'. Separately, both remain 'basic teacher'. In other words, none of the two on its own can be 'the best teacher'.
