I'm looking to submit my first book-length manuscript. Are there any presses that would be best for emerging academics? Would it be better to simply search for a suitable publisher by ranking, interests of acquisitions editors, etc.?
First, do not think about yourself as an "emerging scholar", think about yourself as an expert in a particular topic\field who wishes to share his/her unique knowledge with a wider audience.
Second, most of respectable publishing houses perform the same procedure of non-blind review of book proposals. So, try to develop a very assertive book proposal which inspire a potential review (usually a prominent scholar in the field) to see the whole book.
Third, Routledge, Edward Elgar and Springer (including Springer Open) are not arrogant and consider the books of "novices".
