In teaching mathematics, I prefer the combination of both the traditional chalk/pen and board and the slides presentation but still more on the first, especially on explaining solutions to mathematical problems and the like. 

A combination of both the methods would be best. 

Not everything can be taught by ICT, and a pure chalk and board method would not be sufficient in achieving higher cognitive and affective domain objectives and it will be quite boring for the new generation students as well.

I think it should be the combination of both methods.

it depends on the concept if its explanatory and is a working model then rather than board use the digital ways of teaching so its effective and creates a space for imagination for the students and also different ways to think possible solutions for the existing problem

I combine, presentations, demonstrations, educational films  with chalk and blackboard. However, the most important component is the understanding of the subject by the instructor.

Chalk and duster keep the teacher prepared and active and PPTs facilitate the teacher.

Students like combination of both as it breaks the monotony.

During power point lectures, sometimes I need Board and chalk for illustrations. But simultaneous use of two systems may be difficult, because,

1. Many times Screen is spread over the board, and major portion of the board is covered, if both are placed in the central position.

2. For show on digital projectors, less light is required, but during the use of board light requirement increases. 

So I connect the VGA Port to Desktop and HDMI port to the visualizer. During lecture I just switch over different modes by remote control. When illustrations are needed, I take a paper under visualizer and do the same work by pen as on board.

At last students love good teaching, whether it is traditional chalk and talk method or ICT enabled teaching does not matter.

From my experience, the traditional teaching (chalk and duster) offers little, as students get bored quickly, independently of the ability of the teacher to share simply and clearly the knowledge.

To attract the attention of young (and not only) people, teaching must include motion, color and interchanging pictures with the use of the modern technology, e.g. powerpoint presentations. In small classes (maximum 20 students), the active participation of the students must be encouraged.

Teaching must be adapted to students to gaining the greater possible benefit.

I use both, as I get grab of anything as I teach, as long as it helps me communicate.

I use slideshow a lot, but I also draw with several different colors as I teach Anatomy which is a mostly pictorial subject. I prefer chalk, because it allows me to use more than 7 colours, and I use them all as I draw...

I have following observations:

My college is a rural college. When the under graduate students are first exposed to ICT enabled classes in college, they like it very much and become overwhelmed. If traditionally I dictate something, some students find it difficult. Sometimes they lack in rapid listening skill, are not well conversant in English, spellings remain incorrect. But viewing the book pages directly by digital visualizer or viewing the power point-slides can reduce these difficulties.

But sometimes Post graduate students feel tired by continuous staring at screen (say for six hours). In these cases, one traditional chalk and talk lecture comes as a relief to them. 

These are teaching tools and always evolve with times. The area on which we must concentrate is teachers and faculty trainings. We should always be focused on CPD for teachers and faculty members in teaching institutions.

I think c) is the best solution. Students can see how to solve some problem "step by step" - with appropriate commentary - just in time.

I like teaching by the combination of the traditional and computer-aided methods to utilize the advantage of each. The chalk-and-duster method can show words and equations at the speed of thinking, and the modern method can show beautiful diagrams and moving images.

Finding these 2 types of teaching method might not be apple-to-apple comparison as they can be used for different purpose.  To answer the question - which type is better is dependent on factors like teacher's preference, availability of computer & projector, nature of subjects, adhoc or pre-prepared teaching etc.  From my personal experience, following are the advantages of each.

Responding to the question as a techie and trendy student of the 21st century. Using computers and slides are more preferable. Reasons being that computer and technological gadgets have become  part of our lifestyle. We love to use it all the time and hence, its considerably going to glue our attention when used to deliver lectures to us. Moreover, most if not nearly everything nowadays could be done better, faster, neater and more conveniently with the help of computers, so why not just grab it with both hands?

I think in presence of global context we should prefer on computer with power point slides laterally with white board marker. Because only computer slide presentation cannot convey massage perfectly from teacher to students.

It depends on the economy of a country. Chalk and duster for lower classes, while computer shall be better for higher classes.

according to my opinion it is depends on subject which subject you taught in the class. if you presenting some diagram or 3D diagram it is better to use a slides. but if your subject is like numerical subject then it is better to use chalk and duster. it means both using traditional chalk/duster and computer/slides.

Dear Mahamad, the most important technique in teaching is the teacher him or herself. In most places of the world there are no materials, no chalk, no slide shows, not even images. But children and older students cannot wait for chalk: they need education NOW. I believe teachers in poverty-stricken places are heroes. To ask if a slide show is better or worse than chalk misses the point: the most important thing in education is the teacher's knowledge, and that knowledge is seldom addressed here in RG.

Teach with passion, not with chalk or PowerPoint. It doesn't matter so long as you fill your teaching with energy, humour and a love of your subject.

One of my best lectures was on statistical hypothesis testing, where the IT system had failed and there was no whiteboard. I taught using nothing but my hands to gesticulate. They loved it.

A good teacher who is a wise and prudent, would not be limited by the means in conveying knowledge to be the truth and seeks to creatively and using parables and examples are there to be able to deliver something becomes easy to be understood by other parties who want to learn.

These visuals are definitely more attractive than those descriptions in a few lines of a textbook.

One of the main reasons behind the constant increase in popularity of smart classes is the fact that this kind of education is perfect for all kinds of students. But the use of smart classes and modern technology eases the learning process for all students. Combination of a and b is certainly preferable.

Computer allows a continous interaction and in real time, but traditional chalk and duster allowe to capture non-verbal comunication.

I prefer slides.

I find that the images/graphs  that you can insert  capture the attention of learners and make easier the understanding of the matter ...

as well as make it easier for the teacher to remember everything he/she want to discuss ..

All the possible teaching aids should be used to deliver the idea in the most simplified and remarkable way.

Thank you for question . Both a & b are actually not considered methods ,those are teaching aids or measures. That is basically to focus important points or calculation etc .Those can be audio,visual or both like video or only listening aids ,sometime we use movie clips or movies also to teach..These device make learning much easier because those have different impact but teacher actually used lecturing method/strategy.But personally I prefer discussion and demonstration methods where student can involve themselves and learn much faster ,need based ,more motivated way.But I have less experience & skills about child teaching.My extented school mental health program I am teaching children by psychodrama or radio talks with telephone question answer sessions.I am experience more in adult learning.So my personal opinion those who expert in child learning can explain this issues.

Dear all, I was downvoted for applauding  dear Ronán's praise for passion in teaching. I am quite surprised. Without the teacher's vehemence (which conveys commitment), students will not even listen, pay attention to the words written in chalk, or care about the power point slides. I have been a teacher for 22 years, and it is the teacher's commitment and emphasis on his or her demeanor what invites the students to pay  attention. Vehemence and passion are indispensable in the classroom.
