I’m completing a research project in college, it’s on “birth order and the effects it has on self esteem and academic motivation”.
My three objectives are
1. To identify differences in academic motivation based on birth order
2. To identify differences in self esteem based on birth order
3. To analyse the relationship between birth order, self esteem and academic motivation.
I’m using questionnaires for this research but I need to use a different statistical test using SPSS for each of my 3 objectives but I don’t know what to do, any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is one of those research topics that many people will be able to relate to (especially anyone who has siblings :) )
On a first note, there are a few aspects that require some consideration before using any statistical tests, and these have to do with the coding of birth order.
For example, is the meaning of being born second the same when you were also the last? Or does the meaning of being second change if a third sibling is born (i.e. if you have become a 'middle' child)? And what if there is a large family of, say, 5 or more children? Can we still combine all individuals with score '2' in the same group? Or maybe you have coded the order as 'first' 'last' and 'middle'? This is rather important for the data analysis and the way you will be able to interpret the results.
Anyway, suppose we could assume that the value of the variable 'birth order' can be regarded as a grouping variable, the most logical method to answer each of your questions is the ANOVA (if birth order is binary this is equivalent to a t-test).
Moreover, if you want to test whether birth order has a significant effect on both aspects simultaneously, a M(ultivariate)ANOVA is appropriate.
ANOVA is part of the family of regression analyses where the dependent variable is continuous and the predictor variables are factors (nominal, or possibly ordinal). You can get the explained variance from the ANOVA (usually denoted as eta-squared in SPSS if I remember correctly) to see how much can actually be explained.
