Dear colleagues, I'm doing an HPTLC of several plant oils to compare their lipidic profiles, i have two protocoles the first one with sulfuric-vanillic acid, the second with phosphomolibdic acid. I did a trial with phosphomolibdic acid and used the TLC scanner with 650nm. Iwould like to know if its possible to have better results with sulfuric-vanillic acid. thank you very much.

I prefer to use primuline as a staining reagent for HPTLC of lipids, as it uses fluorescence for detection and thus is very sensitive.

As far as I know primuline is specific to lipids. It doesn't show different colors for different lipid species, but it's fluorescence is quantitative to lipid amount.
