Nowadays, most of journals offer two options for publication: open access and subscription. As a researcher which option do you prefer to publish your work? Why? What are the pros and cons of each option?
I prefer to publish my work on open access, provided that I have a budget for open access publication. The pros of open access are increases in citation and usage. The con is it is chargeable. The pros and cons of subscription-based publication are the opposite. The number of citations is smaller in subscription-based publication, but subscription-based publication is free. By the way, some journals are open-access journals, such as Scientific Reports.
I prefer open access if the two are nearly in the same choice set. However most of us end-up in subscription because we can not make our papers open access. More funding is required to make more of the subscription fee available to many scientists. Knowledge is expensive and people invest resources in making it accessible, they need to be compensated of course for the sacrifices they make.
If it is up to me, and I have the budget for it, I will choose open access each time. With Open Access, researchers can read the findings of others without restriction, so any one interested have access to the latest research findings throughout the world. in addition, open access increases the papers view and citation.
